Terms of Use
These Terms govern the use of Menu Translator Documentation ("Menu Translator"), an app in the NEXTBASE Documentation Camera Series, and its Premium subscription.
1. Agreement
By downloading, accessing, purchasing, or using Menu Translator, the user agrees to these Terms and the Privacy Policy. If the user does not agree, the app should not be used. The app license is also subject to Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement unless a valid custom EULA is provided through App Store Connect.
2. Operator
Menu Translator Documentation is operated by Norimasa Nakamura, trading as NEXT BASE-Japan ("NEXTBASE," "we," "us," or "our"). Contact: info@nextbase-japan.com.
3. Product purpose
Menu Translator is an informational travel utility. It is designed to let a user photograph a foreign-language restaurant menu, recognize supported text, translate supported text into the user’s preferred language, detect supported menu prices, and display an estimated currency conversion using available exchange-rate information.
Menu Translator assists understanding only. It is not a certified translation service, financial service, medical service, allergy-safety service, dietary-compliance service, religious-compliance service, tax calculator, or restaurant billing system.
4. License
Subject to these Terms, NEXTBASE grants the user a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Menu Translator on Apple devices the user owns or controls, as permitted by Apple’s usage rules.
5. Recognition and translation
Recognition and translation may be incomplete, inaccurate, delayed, unsupported, or unavailable. Results may omit text, confuse similar characters, mistranslate dish names, ingredients, cooking methods, warnings, allergens, quantities, or cultural terms, or combine content in an incorrect order.
The user must verify important information directly with the restaurant or a qualified human translator. The app must not be relied upon as the sole source for allergy, health, medical, safety, religious, dietary, legal, or financial decisions.
6. Prices and currency conversion
Detected prices and converted amounts are estimates. Recognition may identify the wrong number, currency, decimal separator, thousands separator, symbol, menu section, portion, or unit. Exchange rates may be delayed, cached, unavailable, or different from the rate used by a bank, card issuer, payment provider, restaurant, airport, hotel, or cash-exchange service.
Converted amounts may exclude tax, service charges, tips, cover charges, card fees, foreign-transaction fees, dynamic currency conversion, minimum charges, deposits, exchange spreads, rounding, and other additions. The restaurant’s current menu, staff confirmation, and final bill govern the actual price.
7. Free usage allowance
The free version permits the first three successful results in total. A free use is consumed only when all of the following complete successfully:
- menu text recognition;
- translation of supported recognized text;
- detection of at least one supported price;
- currency conversion using a usable exchange rate; and
- display of the completed result screen.
Cancelled attempts, camera retakes, unsupported content, recognition failures, translation failures, price-detection failures, unavailable exchange rates, conversion failures, and result-display failures do not consume a free use.
Deleting the app, restoring a device, changing devices, or operating-system behavior may affect a locally stored allowance. Deleting or retaking a successful result does not restore a consumed free use. The remaining allowance displayed by the app governs available free usage.
8. Premium subscription
Menu Translator Premium is offered as an auto-renewable monthly subscription. The reference price is US$2.99 per month, but the exact localized price, currency, taxes, billing period, and purchase terms displayed by Apple in the app and purchase confirmation sheet govern the transaction.
Premium provides unlimited use of the app’s supported recognition, translation, price-detection, and currency-conversion workflow while the subscription entitlement remains active, subject to device capability, supported languages and currencies, network access, provider availability, fair use, these Terms, and applicable law.
Product identifier: com.nextbase.menutranslator.premium.monthly.
9. Payment, renewal, cancellation, and refunds
Payment is charged by Apple to the user’s Apple Account upon purchase confirmation. The subscription renews automatically unless cancelled according to Apple’s rules before the end of the current billing period. Users can manage or cancel subscriptions in Apple Account Settings.
Cancellation stops future renewals but does not normally provide a prorated refund for the current billing period. Refund requests, billing disputes, purchase history, family-sharing eligibility, and payment-method issues are handled by Apple under Apple’s policies and applicable law. NEXTBASE does not receive full payment-card details.
10. Restore Purchases
The app provides a Restore Purchases function for eligible App Store entitlements. Restoration requires the Apple Account used for the purchase, network access, and successful verification by Apple. NEXTBASE cannot manually create or override an Apple entitlement without valid purchase evidence.
11. Devices, permissions, and availability
Menu Translator requires a compatible iPhone, supported iOS version, Camera permission, supported Apple recognition and Translation capabilities, and sufficient device resources. Some language resources may need to be downloaded or made available by the operating system. Currency conversion normally requires network access to retrieve exchange-rate information unless a usable cached rate is available.
We do not guarantee compatibility with every device, iOS version, language pair, writing system, menu format, currency, restaurant, lighting condition, camera condition, or network environment.
12. Exchange-rate provider
The current implementation may retrieve public exchange-rate information from Frankfurter or a successor provider. Provider data, availability, supported currencies, update schedules, and service terms may change. NEXTBASE may replace, suspend, or remove an exchange-rate provider when reasonably necessary for security, reliability, legal compliance, or product maintenance.
13. User responsibility and lawful use
The user is responsible for having permission to photograph a menu and for complying with restaurant rules, local law, privacy rights, copyright, confidentiality, and device-use restrictions. The app must not be used to photograph private documents, payment cards, identity documents, confidential business information, or people without appropriate authority.
14. Prohibited conduct
- Use the app unlawfully or to violate another person’s rights.
- Misrepresent app output as certified, guaranteed, medically safe, allergy-safe, legally binding, or financially authoritative.
- Interfere with security, purchases, entitlements, free-use limits, or technical restrictions.
- Reverse engineer, redistribute, resell, or modify the app except where applicable law expressly permits.
- Use automated means to abuse the app, exchange-rate provider, StoreKit, or support service.
15. No guarantee of food safety
Do not consume food based solely on an app translation. Ingredients, allergens, cross-contact risks, preparation methods, alcohol, animal products, dietary classifications, and religious restrictions may be omitted or translated incorrectly. Ask restaurant staff directly and seek qualified medical advice where needed.
16. Privacy
Use of the app is subject to the Privacy Policy. The core workflow is designed not to upload menu images or recognized menu text to NEXTBASE servers or an external translation provider. Exchange-rate, StoreKit, operating-system, and user-initiated support communications remain subject to the applicable provider’s and platform’s practices.
17. Updates and service changes
We may update, modify, suspend, or discontinue features to maintain security, compatibility, legal compliance, provider compatibility, and product quality. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation or permanent availability of any language, currency, provider, workflow, or feature.
18. Intellectual property
Menu Translator Documentation, the NEXTBASE Documentation Camera Series, NEXTBASE branding, interface design, software, text, graphics, and related materials are owned by NEXTBASE or its licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. Apple, App Store, iPhone, iOS, Vision, Translation, StoreKit, and related marks belong to Apple Inc. Frankfurter and other third-party names belong to their respective owners.
Users retain rights in photographs they create, subject to the rights of restaurants, menu creators, photographers, publishers, and other persons or organizations.
19. Disclaimers
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Menu Translator is provided "as is" and "as available." NEXTBASE disclaims warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, completeness, availability, compatibility, translation quality, price accuracy, exchange-rate accuracy, food safety, dietary suitability, and acceptance by any restaurant, bank, card issuer, government body, medical professional, or other third party.
20. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, NEXTBASE will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for illness, allergic reaction, dietary or religious non-compliance, overpayment, exchange loss, banking charges, missed orders, travel disruption, data loss, profits, opportunity, or reliance on recognition, translation, price, or conversion results. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded.
21. Apple terms
Apple is not responsible for Menu Translator or its support. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support services. If these Terms conflict with Apple’s applicable platform rules, Apple’s rules govern App Store distribution and in-app purchases. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms as applicable to the licensed application.
22. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except where mandatory consumer protections in the user’s country apply. Courts with jurisdiction over the operator’s location in Japan will have jurisdiction unless applicable consumer law requires otherwise.
23. Changes
We may update these Terms when the app, business model, providers, or law changes. Continued use after the effective date of updated Terms constitutes acceptance where permitted by law.
