Menu Translator Support
Photograph a foreign-language menu and receive a supported translation with estimated price conversion in one focused workflow.
What Menu Translator does
Menu Translator opens directly to the camera. Photograph a menu, wait while the app recognizes and translates supported text, and review detected prices with an estimated conversion into the currency associated with the device region.
The app is an informational travel aid. Always confirm ingredients, allergens, dietary requirements, religious requirements, current prices, taxes, service charges, and the final bill directly with restaurant staff.
Contact
Email info@nextbase-japan.com. Include the app version, iOS version, iPhone model, source menu language if known, expected result, actual result, and any error message.
Do not send payment-card details, identity documents, health information, travel documents, private photographs, or confidential information. A cropped sample of non-sensitive menu text should be sent only when necessary to investigate recognition or translation.
Take a clear menu photo
- Use even lighting and avoid strong glare or shadows.
- Keep the menu flat and hold the iPhone steady.
- Move close enough for letters and prices to be sharp.
- Keep the relevant menu section inside the camera frame.
- Avoid including multiple distant pages in one photograph.
- Clean the camera lens before retrying.
Camera does not open
Open iOS Settings and confirm that Camera permission is enabled for Menu Translator. Restart the app after changing permission. Camera access may also be restricted by Screen Time, device-management policy, or another system setting.
Recognition is incomplete or incorrect
Retake the photograph with better lighting, less perspective distortion, and larger text. Decorative fonts, handwriting, vertical text, low contrast, folded menus, mixed languages, uncommon symbols, and damaged print may reduce recognition quality.
Recognition output is not guaranteed. Review important dish names, ingredients, warnings, quantities, and prices with restaurant staff.
Translation is unavailable
- Confirm that the iPhone is running a supported iOS version.
- Confirm that the source and destination language pair is supported by Apple’s Translation framework.
- Connect to the internet if iOS needs to obtain a language resource.
- Wait for any required language resource to finish downloading, then retry.
- Restart the app or iPhone if the system translation service remains unavailable.
Menu Translator does not provide a manual language-selection screen in the initial version. It uses available language signals and the user’s device language. Unsupported or ambiguous menus may not translate successfully.
No price was detected
A successful result requires at least one supported price. Retake the photograph so the price and its currency symbol or code are visible. Price detection may fail when prices are handwritten, shown only in images, split across lines, printed without a currency indicator, or confused with item numbers, weights, dates, or menu references.
Wrong or unexpected currency
The initial version does not include a manual currency selector. The destination currency is associated with the iPhone’s current region settings. Review the region under iOS Language & Region settings and retry after correcting it.
The source currency is inferred from recognized menu information. When a menu uses an ambiguous symbol such as $, ¥, or kr without a clear country or currency code, the app may be unable to identify the correct currency or may produce an incorrect estimate. Confirm the currency with restaurant staff.
Currency conversion is unavailable
Currency conversion normally needs network access to retrieve public exchange-rate information. Check the connection and retry. The app may reuse a locally cached rate for approximately one hour. If no usable current or cached rate exists, conversion remains unavailable and the attempt should not consume a free use.
Exchange-rate providers may be temporarily unavailable or may not support every currency. A converted amount is only an estimate and may differ from a bank, card issuer, restaurant, airport, hotel, or cash-exchange rate.
Converted price differs from the final bill
The result may exclude tax, service charges, tips, cover charges, card fees, foreign-transaction fees, dynamic currency conversion, deposits, exchange spreads, rounding, and menu updates. The restaurant’s current price and final bill govern the amount owed.
Free usage allowance
The first three successful results in total are free. A free use is consumed only when recognition, translation, supported price detection, currency conversion, and completed result display all succeed.
Cancelled attempts, retakes, unsupported content, recognition failures, translation failures, missing prices, unavailable exchange rates, conversion failures, and result-display failures do not consume a free use. A successful use is not restored by retaking, closing the result, or deleting and reinstalling content.
Premium subscription
Menu Translator Premium is purchased through Apple as an auto-renewable monthly subscription. The reference price is US$2.99 per month. Apple’s localized price, currency, taxes, billing period, and confirmation sheet govern the transaction.
Premium provides unlimited supported results while the entitlement remains active, subject to device capability, supported languages and currencies, network access, provider availability, fair use, and the Terms of Use.
Restore Purchases
- Confirm the iPhone is signed in to the Apple Account used for the purchase.
- Connect to the internet.
- Open the Premium screen after the three free successful uses have been consumed.
- Select Restore Purchases.
- Wait for Apple to verify the active entitlement.
If restoration fails, restart the app, confirm the Apple Account, and retry. Billing, refund, and purchase-history requests are handled through Apple’s purchase-support process.
Manage or cancel the subscription
Manage or cancel the subscription in Apple Account Settings. Cancellation prevents future renewals according to Apple’s rules but normally does not provide a prorated refund for the current billing period.
No history or saved results
The initial version does not provide an account, history screen, saved-menu library, or result archive. Save any information you need through a method available on the device before leaving the result screen. NEXTBASE does not maintain a server copy of menu photographs or translated menu results through the core workflow.

Report a problem
Provide reproducible steps and identify whether the issue concerns Camera permission, recognition, translation, price detection, source currency, destination currency, exchange-rate retrieval, cached-rate display, free-use counting, purchase, restore, cancellation, or a legal-page link.
